All you have to do is change your mind...

I believe that if we want to see things happen differently in our lives, we can't just keep doing and thinking the same things that got us into that mess in the first place. Many times patients come to me because they are are tired of feeling so bad. They either have all the plans ready but can't take action, they have no idea what they want for themselves, or they're somewhere in the middle. You continue to experience the same problems, when you continue to do the same actions and think the same thoughts. That is the definition of insanity--- doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results. There is no way around this, you have to do the work and you have to make changes--both minor and major--otherwise you will still feel the same bad way you've been feeling. There is no magic answer that doesn't involve effort on your part, and if anyone talks about an easy fix, they are lying--or they are magicians and if so then thats cool I love a good magic show.
Change is hard because it's uncomfortable, it's uncertain, it's new territory. Imagine if you could really be as happy as you want to be, then you really have something to lose. People fear change just as much as they fear feeling the same bad way for the rest of their lives. Even though those negative feelings suck, we are used to them--we know what that looks like. Being happy, that's a whole other story.
Our anxiety, our depression, our self-loathing-- all of this becomes comfortable..we sometimes hide behind it. Not to say that these feelings aren't real, they are real and scary and the worst and sometimes a result of something chemically happening up in our brains, but they are also sometimes a result of the conversation we have with ourselves, or the self-destructive things we choose to do. Once we realize we can choose to not feel this way anymore, it's enlightening.
To get to a place where you move from planning to action, it starts with your mind. You need to really sit down, honestly assess your current situation, admit where you are lacking, and acknowledge and be proud of where you shine. Once you know what you are working with, you can plan around that. You consider what makes you YOU, and then you map out what exactly is needed for you to get from A to B.
